Origin of Zam Zam Water
According to Islamic tradition, Hazrat Ibrahim (A.S) as per instructions of Allah Almighty left his wife Hazrat Hajira and infant son Hazrat Ismail (A.S) at a spot in the desert of Makah and walked away. The young infant was blubbering with thirst and Hazrat Hajira was desperately seeking water for him. As Makah is a hot dry valley and there were, few water sources so she ran seven times back and forth between Safa and Marwah but could not find water. When the young Ismail scraped the land with his feet, Allah Almighty showed his mercy and quenched the thirst of young Ismail by bouncing out the water. Another interpretation is that Allah sent Gabriel, he kicked the ground with his wing, and water sprang out.

Name of Zam Zam Water
When the water started flowing Hazrat Hajira repeatedly said “Zome Zome”. It means “Stop Flowing” when she repeated several times by the mercy of Allah Almighty the water stopped flowing. This repeated phrase gives it the name of Zam Zam.

Zam Zam Well
The spring water later converted into a well and became a resting place for caravans. With the passage of time it became a trading city of Makah.  Zam Zam well is about 30 m (98 ft) deep and (3 ft 7 in to 8 ft 9 in) in diameter. It is located within Masjid ul Haram 20m east of Holy Kaabah

Intrinsic Worth of Zam Zam Water

Zam Zam water is of great importance for Muslims and it is Sunnah to drink Zam Zam water. It is a gift of Allah Almighty for the pilgrims to quench their thirst with this Holy water. It is a holy water and due respect should be given too it. It is therefore mustahab to say Bismillah, stand face Kaabah and drink in three intervals.

Importance of am Zam Water in the light of Hadith 

Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The best water on the face of the earth is the water of Zam Zam; it is a kind of food and a healing from sickness.” (Saheeh al-Jaami’, 3302). v  The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The water of Zam Zam is for whatever it is drunk for.” (Narrated by Ibn Maajah)   v  The Messenger of Allah, (peace be upon him) has said:” The most sublime of all earthly waters is that of Zam Zam; therein one finds food for the hungry and medicine for the ill.” [ At- Tabarani ]   v  “Zam Zam water is what one intends to drink it for. When one drinks it to be healed, Allah heals him; when one drinks it to be full, Allah makes him full; and when one drinks it to quench his thirst, Allah quenches it”. [ Ahmad, and Ibn Majah]

The qualities of Zam Zam water are proving by natural sciences. It contains calcium, magnesium salts, natural fluorides that help in healing by their germicidal actions. This water is free from contaminations so it cures the sick and gives nourishment to the body
