hram and Ransom

Things Forbidden in Ihram and Ransom (Fidya) upon them

Last Updated: February 8, 2024By

There are three types of restrictions in Ihram

1-      Things which are forbidden for both men and women.

Cutting of hair, cutting nails, applying perfume after Ihram, intercourse (marital relationships) for example, doing Nikah, looking at one another with lust, wearing socks, wearing gloves, hunting are strictly forbidden for both men and women.

2-      Things forbidden only for men.

Men are not allowed to wear stitched clothes and to cover their heads.

3-      Forbidden only for women.

Women are not allowed to wear hijab that would touch their face. However, they can wear a cloth which does not touch their face in order to do cover it from non-mehrums.

If a person does any of the above things without any Sharai excuse then they have committed a sin and will have to pay ransom for it. But if someone does it with an excuse then there will be ransom but no sin. But if someone does it by mistake, unawareness, by force, then the person will neither have to pay ransom nor it will be counted as a sin.

The quantity of ransom

On committing the aforementioned things one has to ransom by sacrificing a goat or feeding six poor people or fast for three days. But if someone leaves any of the Wajibat of Hajj such as, pelting stones in Jamrat, spending night in Muzdalfah, wearing Ihram from Miqat etc, then they will have to perform sacrifice (dam). If they are unable to do it then they will have to fast for ten days. Three fasts during Hajj and rest of four after coming back home. If someone cannot fast for three days during Hajj then they will have to fast at home.

The punishment of hunting

If a person hunts an animal, and there is an identical animal of this kind present at home then the person will have to do one thing from these three things, either slaughter a pet animal of the same kind and distribute the meat within the poor and needy of Makkah, or buy grocery in accordance with the price of the animal and distribute the ration amongst needy and poor according to half Saa to each person. Lastly, the person can fast for every half saa. If the person cannot find the animal of the same kind then he will have the choice to do either of the last two things.

Sacrifice upon Mutamati and Qarin

It is obligatory upon those who perform Hajj-e-Tamattu and Hajj-e-Qiran to sacrifice one animal (at minimum). If they cannot find animal then they will have to fast for ten days. Three fasts during Hajj and the rest four at home.

The ransom of a Muhsir

If a Hajji is stopped on his way to Hajj and he cannot reach to Bait-ullah then he will perform his sacrifice and will open his Ihram. And upon unavailability of animal he will have to fast for ten days in the similar manner as above mentioned.
