What is the Black Stone in Makkah

The sacred Kaaba, the main building of the Grand Holy Mosque in Makkah, holds the Black Stone, which is sacred. It’s an ancient black rock. Many people touch or kiss the stone as a sign of respect and devotion to their faith.

Moreover, the Black Stone represents a covenant between God and the people. Muslims greatly respect it because of its religious and historical value, even though it is not worshipped. Many Muslims are connected to their spiritual history and views through the stone’s role in the Hajj rituals. Its long history and ongoing significance demonstrate a strong feeling of continuity and dedication in Islamic tradition.

History of Hijr-e-Aswad

The Mecca Kaaba black stone has a rich historical significance in Islam. Some other sources suggest that Allah sent the Black Stone to Hazrat Adam (A.S) to guide him in choosing the location on Earth where he should build an altar.

In addition, during the reconstruction of the Holy Kaaba, at the time of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W), a dispute arose between different tribes regarding the issue of placing the Black Stone. Every tribe wanted to be the first to do this blessed task. So, it was decided that whoever would enter the Masjid Al-Haram first would place the stone. By the will of Allah, the person turned out to be Prophet (S.A.W.W) to position the stone with his blessed hands. Prophet (S.A.W) made a wise decision to allocate everyone to this prestigious task. He ordered to place the stone on a sheet, and one member from each tribe would hold the corner of the sheet; Hence, the Hijr-e-Aswad was placed where the Prophet (S.A.W.W) took it in his hands and kissed it. So, it became a Sunnah to kiss this blessed stone and seek Allah’s forgiveness.

Although it is a stone, it represents Allah’s mercy and blessings, and kissing it is believed to forgive a person’s sins. For this reason, pilgrims should not be impatient but wait for their turn in case of the crowd. If a person cannot kiss it, he/she should not fight but just need to kiss it in the air by pointing the hands towards Hijr-e-Aswad and making dua.

The Hadith of the Prophet (S.A.W.W) mentions the significance of the Black Stone Mecca; the crux of the hadith is ‘Hijr-e-Aswad is Allah’s right hand on this earth. On the day of judgement Hijr e Aswad would come with a tongue and testify for those who kissed it with sincerity.
